Reading and Eating Vegan in Siem Reap: Poké Me Siem Reap Review

Siem Reap is a haven for vegans. Who knew? But if you’re here for the books, and not those annoying healthy people, then rest assured, the reading roundup is first!

Many moons ago, I mentioned this beauty, The Seven (or 7½) Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton. It’s, by far, one of the most original mystery novels I’ve ever read. But don’t take my word for it, ‘Seven Deaths’ has been translated into 28 languages and has won numerous awards.

Netflix tried to make a seven part series out of it, but couldn’t after two years of trying. I’m assuming it’s because the storyline is UTTERLY INSANE that they couldn’t do it justice. Highly recommend for those who don’t mind complex narratives and lots of characters. It was a blessing to dive into it without expectations because it was one of the best reads for me this year.

Bel Canto by Ann Pratchett was recommended by a blogger who had a “books I still remember after many years” list. I wish I could find it again because there were other interesting ones. In any case, enter Bel Canto, which they made into a movie and an opera.

The novel though is fantastic. Really, another gem to help round out a year in books. Pratchett based the story on the 1996-1997 Japanese embassy hostage crisis in Lima, Peru. It follows both the hostages and the terrorists, but she does it in an intimate way, moving from person to person seamlessly, so that you enjoy each person’s point of view.

Highly recommend.

And now on to the food!

According to their FB page, “Poké me means the poké bowl made by me. The idea is to introduce more healthy options to everybody”.

Every Sunday they post their weekly menu:

Each meal is $3.50 and they deliver from 11am to 1pm. Delivery is free and directly through them. We’ve done it for two weeks so far, and they’ve been pretty good about delivering around 11.30am. i also like that they use reusable containers, which you can provide or you can purchase for $1 each.

We’ve been able to stretch some of the meals into two, so that we’ve got lunch and dinner. We supplement with bread, or rice, or even a salad depending on the meal.

Some meals we’ve enjoyed!

This service is also great because you don’t have to think about what you want to eat everyday. It’s funny because we’ve hardly ever ordered food online as we prefer to either eat out or cook in. I know meal deliveries are super popular, but again, it’s never been our thing. To me, this is a nice compromise — you can enjoy a variety of healthy meals on a budget.

What about you? Do you use Food Panda, Grab, or a food delivery service?

And what have you been reading lately? Reading and eating ~ some of life’s great joys! Until next time, xo

I really love this. The food looks wonderful! Count me in for anything with mushrooms. I never use food delivery services here in the U.S. because we live in a rural area that doesn’t have them, really, or if I could manage someone to deliver to my house it would be crazy expensive. I am looking forward to going out to eat with a friend this week–we haven’t decided yet on sushi or Thai. As for your book picks–Bel Canto is one of my all-time favorite novels. I’m fascinated by opera, so that helps. And Anne Patchett is usually pretty great. I haven’t read her latest, Tom Lake, yet, but I’ve heard good things. Happy eating, reading, and writing, my friend!

Thanks! Yeah, in SE Asia the delivery food craze is just that — I’ve seen drinks delivered and I find that, well, rather amusing to put it mildly.

I’ve gotten creative with food delivery, like one of my (former) student’s parents owns an Italian restaurant, and I’m like, hey, when you pick up G, could you also bring me a pizza? Hahahahaha.

Yeah, I’ll be checking Ann Pratchett out again for use! Hugs from Cambodia, xo

    Hi Lani,

I was so happy to follow your journey via newsletter and blog recently, because you very clearly started to feel much better and it’s interesting to see how you and your partner’s rhythms and roles somewhat adjusted as part of the transition, too.

The restaurant looks great, but for some reason I could not find it on Google maps. Not that I would have plans to come to SR any time soon, but makes me feel safe to look at my map and see all the flags with potentially great eats 😅 Do you happen to have a link?

Regarding food delivery, I was equally… amazed by my friends here in Taiwan getting their individual cup of coffee (even an espresso 🤣🤣🤣) delivered but well, some days ago, there I was, sick in bed, run out of water, and so I got my first water bottle delivered to my doorstep (at the same price as if I went myself to the store to buy the same brand and size, insane).

Well, anyway, I want to send you my greetings and all the best for this exciting new chapter!

    Cheers,
    Fabian

Thanks, Fabian. I appreciate you reading and following along. And now you have a blog! Awesome. I can keep track of you two/too 😉

Poke Me doesn’t have a physical/bricks and mortal location like restaurant. They only do delivery orders for their pre-set menu.

There’s another place that we order from that does the same thing with bread. *chef’s kiss* It’s a smart business model, I think.

Ha! Love your coffee story. Sorry you were sick though. And thanks again! 🙂

        Huhu Lani,

Then it’s an even better find, if it’s not even on Google maps it basically doesn’t exist in my US corporate-guided worldview 🤪

Also thank you for your comment on the blog- in fact it took me down memory lane because I was not aware that this blog still existed haha- I think before I did not need to log in to comment here so yesterday I thought hmmm I think there is still a WordPress account lurking around somewhere 😅

I do have a current blog, of much less general interest though 🙈 http://www.fabian-voith.de

I’m looking forward to your coming adventures – happy weekend for now!

The food looks fantastic!!! I make my own meals almost all the time, so if I want my veggies to stay fresh, I can’t have too many varieties. Maybe I should get takeout every so often for variety.

I read Bel Canto a long time ago, and I loved it and still remember it. She did such a good job with characterization of so many different people and how they reacted to the situation. I’m going to look into The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. Thanks for the suggestion.

I’ve been reading books about Ukraine, both fiction and non-fiction. The Lost Daughters of Ukraine, The War Came to Us, Grey Bees, The Fight of Our Life. I’ve fallen in love with the Ukrainian people.

Now I’m reading Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King.

Bel Canto, yes, so good, totally agree with you on the characterization.

It’s good to fall in love with a people. ❤

And I'd never take you for a Stephen King reader. Interesting!

You know what they say, Nicki, variety is the spice of life! 😉

I haven’t read too much of King, but I’m amazed by his ability to write about the details of character, culture, and dialogue in a believable way.

I must say that I also enjoyed Bel Canto, Lani although I, in general, prefer travel writing to fiction. I recently read and enjoyed two very different books, one set in the American South (Sitting up with the Dead by Pamela Petro), the other in Morocco (In Arabian Nights by Tahir Shah), but both having the telling of stories as its central premise, which was a wonderful way of structuring the two books.

I´m so glad you found delicious vegan food in Siem Reap. Having lived in the UAE where you can get anything delivered to your doorstep in no time, it is quite interesting to live in rural Portugal where it is simply not practical. To be honest, I think I prefer the latter.

Normally, I’d agree with you on the food delivery as I saw an excess of it in Thailand, but it’s a nice change of pace especially since it’s healthy, and we reuse containers. We’re also supporting a local business, no third party apps, etc. But given your situation, I completely understand!

One day I’ll get back into nonfiction books. It’s funny I read nonfiction during the day and at night fiction! Thanks for the recommendations! xo
